A Unique Pop-up Origami Fabrication of Micro Robots

Harvard's Microrobotics Lab has created a new Pop-up Origami style of fabrication for their winged microbots. A carrier is first made out of several layers of carbon fiber, brass, and thin flexible plastic. Then, using fabrication techniques such as laser etching, a design forms and then it is popped into place in sort of a pop-up book and Origami fashion. The robot is then tack soldered to lock the design into place and then laser cut and removed from the carrier material. The Mobee or Monolithic Bee is a very tiny robot at about the size of a Quarter. The video shows this unique assembly process and the finalized Mobee's wings being tested at 1Hz and 30Hz. A must-see very impressive manufacture of winged microbots!

RURO was designed by grade-school kids and sponsored by Osaka’s
business community. A contest to design the robot drew in over 1,600
submissions from 5th and 6th graders. It stands about 2 feet tall and can
play recorded messages as greetings, too. On top of teaching kids,
RURO has a built-in siren and spinning light to scare off any thieves that
it detects.

Taiwan's animated news service thinks it just might happen

Will 2011 be the year we finally welcome robots into our lives?

We're already well on our way, as the brilliant animators at Next Media Animation show us in this video.

And their proof comes straight from the pages of PopSci.

Already, robots are serving food at a Chinese restaurant; teaching English to South Korean children; and driving Google cars.

And how could we (or NMA) forget Japanese roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro, known for his creepily lifelike fembots and Larvabot, the telenoid robot.

It's only a matter of time, NMA suggests, before the military uses fembots for nefarious ends and before they start doing some real damage to human relationships.

In its latest episode, the Robots Podcast interviews science fiction author Greg Bear. Over the years, Bear has been awarded two Hugos and five Nebula awards and has been called the "Best working writer of hard science fiction" by "The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Science Fiction".
 
In the interview, Bear discusses how robots can double as mirrors for the human condition and the moral issues of delegating more and more responsibilities to AIs. He then dives into Isaac Asimov’s work, sharing some of his insights after writing a sequel to the Foundation series.
